Assessment Process

Each year, the High Sheriff of Suffolk makes awards to non-profit groups working for the benefit of the people in Suffolk and gives recognition to those who are tackling local problems and giving of their time and effort voluntarily.

The High Sheriff’s Award Scheme consists of three awards: Suffolk Crimebeat, Youth Organisation of the Year and Volunteer of the Year.

Suffolk Crimebeat Award

The Suffolk Crimebeat Award encourages and recognises work that young people (between 8 and 25 years old) undertake to improve their communities and lives. Of particular interest are projects that address citizenship, community safety and crime prevention, tackling such issues as:

    • Bullying
    • Vandalism and Arson
    • Anti-Social Behaviour
    • Drug and Alcohol Abuse and Awareness
    • Homelessness
    • Internet Safety
    • Knife Crime
    • Road Safety
    • Personal Safety
    • Community Cohesion, especially with the elderly and minorities

If you would like to nominate a young people’s group for this highly coveted annual trophy, the nomination form is available below. Alternatively, please contact us, and we will send you a nomination form. The deadline for nominations is 31 January 2009. The winner will be announced by the end of February, in time for the High Sheriffs’ annual awards ceremony in March.

The nomination process is very simple, but if you would like advice before completing a form or have any concerns over the nomination process or the information required, we ask that you contact us for practical advice and assistance.

The winner of the Suffolk Crimebeat Award is automatically put forward to the prestigious National Crimebeat Award, with prizes of £1,000 for first place, £750 for second place and £500 for third place awarded by Crimestoppers Trust.  The winner of the National Crimebeat Award will be announced in June.

The Youth Organsation of the Year Award

The Youth Organisation of the Year Award recognises the voluntary organisation, community group or charity that best supports young people who are involved in local projects that address citizenship, community safety and crime prevention and thereby are helping to make Suffolk a safer place in which to live. The winner of the Youth Organisation of the Year is personally selected by the High Sheriff.

The Suffolk Volunteer of the Year Award

The Suffolk Volunteer of the Year Award encourages voluntary organisations to nominate one of their volunteers for special recognition of services above and beyond the ‘call of duty’. The award consists of a trophy for the winning volunteer and £1,000.00 for his or her voluntary organisation, charity or community group.
